Melt Gear Pumps in PMMA Production
As the core equipment for precisely controlling melt delivery, melt pumps have become an indispensable component in PMMA production. Their role is particularly irreplaceable in the production of high-end products such as optical-grade PMMA and automotive-grade PMMA, directly determining whether a company can overcome the bottlenecks associated with high-end production.
The core function of melt pumps in PMMA production is based on the principle of positive displacement, combined with the rheological characteristics of PMMA melt, to achieve the threefold objectives of “stable pressure, precise metering, and degradation prevention.”
Essentially, a melt pump is a positive displacement conveying device, consisting primarily of a pair of precision-meshed gears, a pump body, and a sealing structure, and falls under the category of positive displacement conveying equipment. During operation, the rotating gears form a sealed volumetric chamber that draws the PMMA melt from the extruder through the inlet. Through the squeezing action of the meshing gears, the melt is forcibly conveyed to the outlet, achieving metered and continuous delivery—with a constant discharge volume per gear revolution. The output flow rate is linearly proportional to the rotational speed and is unaffected by downstream mold resistance or changes in melt viscosity, perfectly meeting the core requirements of PMMA production for high viscosity and stable conveying.
The rotation of a traditional extruder screw generates periodic pressure fluctuations, whereas PMMA melt has an extremely low tolerance for such fluctuations (allowed fluctuation ≤ ±1%) . The gear meshing structure of the melt pump acts as a “pressure barrier,” effectively isolating pressure fluctuations from the extruder. Simultaneously, through its own pressurization function, it provides constant pressure to the die (typical operating pressure for PMMA production is 10–30 MPa), controlling outlet pressure fluctuations within ±0.5%. This eliminates product dimensional deviations and surface defects caused by pressure fluctuations at the source.
