How Do Melt Gear Pumps Effectively Eliminate Pressure Fluctuations in Extruders?
The pressure-stabilizing capability of melt gear pumps stems from their operating principle, which is fundamentally different from that of extruders: positive displacement.
Principle Analysis: At the heart of a melt gear pump is a pair of gears meshing within a precision pump chamber. As the gears rotate, their teeth and the pump housing form a series of sealed “volumetric units.” On the suction side, these units disengage, increasing the volume to create a vacuum that draws in the melt; on the discharge side, they re-engage, reducing the volume and acting like countless tiny pistons to force the melt out in a non-compressible, metered manner.
Key Characteristics:
Strict linear relationship between flow rate and rotational speed: For every revolution of the pump, the volume of melt discharged (displacement, in cc/r) is fixed. Therefore, the output flow rate (Q) is directly proportional to the pump’s rotational speed (N) (Q = displacement × N). As long as the rotational speed remains stable, the flow rate remains absolutely stable.
Isolation from Upstream Fluctuations: Regardless of pressure fluctuations at the extruder outlet, as long as the melt can be drawn into the pump chamber, the discharge pressure of the gear pump is determined by downstream resistance (primarily the die) and is self-regulating. It acts like a “hydraulic transformer,” converting unstable upstream pressure and flow into stable downstream flow and controllable pressure.
Minimal Internal Leakage and Pulsation: Through precision gear machining, optimized tooth profile design, and micron-level clearance control, modern high-performance melt gear pumps (such as those from WoHua Machinery) can keep internal leakage (volumetric loss) at an extremely low level. Pressure and flow pulsation are minimal, enabling near-linear flow output and laying the foundation for precision extrusion.
Process Applications: In Which Stages Are Melt Gear Pumps Indispensable?
1. Precision Film and Sheet Extrusion
In the production of CPP cast film, PVB interlayer film, and optical-grade PC sheet, the melt gear pump is positioned between the extruder and the T-die, performing two critical functions:
Pressure Stabilization and Metering: Reduces pressure fluctuations at the extruder outlet (±10–15%) to ±1–2% at the die inlet
Pressurized Conveyance: Overcomes the pressure drop caused by the screen changer (approximately 5–10 MPa) and melt pipeline resistance, ensuring the die inlet pressure remains stable within the 15–25 MPa process window
Typical Configuration: Extruder → BATTE Screen Changer (Automatic/Manual) → BATTE Melt Gear Pump → Dynamic Mixer → Die
2. Synthetic Fiber and Nonwoven Spinning
The production of polyester, nylon, and polypropylene filaments, as well as melt-blown nonwovens, demands extremely high melt pressure stability. Melt gear pumps (commonly referred to in the industry as “metering pumps” or “spinning pumps”) deliver the melt to the spinning assembly at a constant flow rate with a precise displacement of 0.5–30 cc/rev.
Process Parameter Reference: For spinning applications, melt gear pumps operate at temperatures of 280–320°C, with outlet pressures of 8–20 MPa and speed control accuracy of ±0.1 rpm, ensuring an output deviation of less than 1% per die orifice.
3. Pelletizing and Recycling/Modification
In two-stage extrusion pelletizing lines, the melt gear pump serves as the core component of the “second stage,” converting the fluctuating melt flow from the upstream extruder into a stable, high-pressure output, which is then integrated with underwater pelletizing or strand pelletizing systems. For highly filled materials (calcium carbonate and glass fiber content >50%) or high-viscosity recycled materials, Wohua melt gear pumps’ carbide bearings and special tooth profile design effectively withstand abrasive operating conditions.
Melt pumps address pressure fluctuations and are an essential choice for the increasingly precise and efficient processing of polymer materials. With the advancement of Industry 4.0, the future trend extends beyond the stability of individual equipment to the intelligent operation of the entire extrusion system. By integrating pressure and temperature sensors and linking them with PLCs and host computers, melt gear pump systems can achieve adaptive control, predictive maintenance, and digital management.
